What is Circle Dancing?

[circle dance]

Circle dances include traditional dances from Central Europe, some of which are hundreds of yeas old, and modern choreography in the same tradition. On a typical evening we enjoy dances from Romania, Bulgaria, Israel, France and elsewhere, as well as modern dances created in this country or elsewhere to the music of many countries, and even Christmas carols.

Before each dance we learn the simple steps and because we are all moving together in a ring, there are none of the complicated manoeuvres found in English and Scottish country dancing. As we say, "No skill, no experience, NO PARTNER needed. If you can walk, you can dance and there are no mistakes, only variations". It is not a class or a workshop, just pure fun. We are there to enjoy ourselves. No special clothing is required, and any soft shoes will do - but please note that trainers tend to cling to the floor.

Our evenings end very gently, with more meditative dances. In Holy Week we have a whole evening of meditative dances, as we re-live the events of the Passion with dances that recall Gethsemane, the walk to Calvary, the last Supper and other incidents leading up to the Crucifixion.
